Edo Queens on Wednesday battled FC Masar of Egypt to a goalless draw in their second Group B match of the 2024 CAF Women’s Champions League in Morocco, leaving their chances of progressing to the semifinals in the balance, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
The Nigerian and West African champions still maintain their pole position on the log with four points, same as their Egyptian opponents, while Mamelodi Sundowns are third with three points following their 4-0 demolition of CBE in the group’s first match on Wednesday.
It means Moses Aduku’s team now must secure at least a draw in their last group match against Sundowns at Larbi Zaouli Stadium, Casablanca, on Saturday to sail through to the last four, as a loss against the defending champions will see Masar secure the first qualification ticket should they beat whipping team CBE in the group’s second match.
After a shock 1-0 defeat to Masar in their opening match, Sundowns now have their tails up after thumping CBE, receiving a much-needed lifeline ahead of the crucial decider on Saturday, where they will face the Nigerians to determine whether they continue with their title defence in Morocco.
Edo Queens are the third Nigerian club to feature in the continental showpiece after Rivers Angels in 2021 and Bayelsa Queens in 2022, with the country’s highest finish being a third-place record by the latter.
